Heading into Alumni Weekend, my partner and I had set plans of where we would be reporting from, as well as who we would get content from. However, as it played out, we were forced to change plans on a last-minute basis, while still completing the project before the deadline.
My partner, Cam, and I headed out early Sunday morning to cover a 5K-run event that was going to involve some Ithaca College alumni. As we walked around the area, there were very few people who were actually present, let alone IC alumni. Immediately, we started thinking of back-up plans. As Cam and I searched over the Alumni Weekend schedule, we found that there was going to be an Alumni Brunch held in the Campus Center that same morning; a place located on the complete other side of campus. We waited it out for ten more minutes or so, until we finally decided to haul ourselves and our supplies over to Campus Center to get some real content. On our walk, we found some really good shots for potential B-roll, as well as images to live-tweet. So far, our project was going completely opposite of our initial plan.
Once we arrived at Campus Center, the people sitting at the front desk mentioned to us that there may be very few, to none, alumni actually inside eating. Now this had us very nervous. Never the less, we walked in and found one person sitting alone at his table; we approached, and it turned out he actually was an Ithaca College alum. We performed the interview, and got some B-roll from inside. Afterwards, we walked throughout campus to get even some more b-roll to connect what the subject was saying in the interview. At the end of the day, Cam and I had all we needed to put together our package.
This project was a perfect example of what it’s like working out in the field. One plan falls through, then it’s on to the next one. We did what we could do get the project in before our deadline, regardless of the obstacles that were presented to us. We were mobile, out and about constantly, and at the same time getting content for our project.
